THE MUNICIPAL PICTURES.

TO BE SHOWN EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT. AND ALTERNATE WEDNESDAYS. At Monday night’s Council meeting the Mayor moved that the Council, in addition to the days appointed for picture entertainments, namely, Saturdays and Wednesdays alternately, they add the extra Saturday night weekly ; also that the dates for matinees be left in the hands of the manager. In speaking to the motion he said that he was bringing it forward because of the confusion that was being caused by the present arrangements. The only way to avoid this was to have the pictures every Saturday night. They should also run them on alternate Wednesdays, in order that those who could not attend on Saturdays should be afforded an opportunity of being present. In regard to matinees, the Mayor said, it was unfortunate that they struck such a bad day for the first one, but he thought that weekly matinees was too often. In Wellington matinees were only run once a mouth. Cr Coley seconded the motion. Cr Spelrs said he was pleased to support the motion. He referred to the great amount of whistling that took place at Saturday night’s entertainment, and said some steps should be taken to prevent this. The Town Clerk said he intended taking steps to put this nuisance down. The motion was carried. THE PIANIST. The question of the appointment of a pianist was again discussed. Three applications for the position were received: Miss Jenks 10s per night, Mr S. Collins 10s, and Mr W. Robson Bs. The Council went into committee to deal with the matter and on resuming business the following motion was carried : Proposed by Cr Adams and seconded by Cr Coley, that Miss Jenks be appointed pianist for the municipal picture entertainments at ros per entertainment, during the pleasure of the Council, THE PIANO. A letter was read from Messrs Chas. Begg and Co., offering to allow the Council a discount of 20 per cent, off their list prices.— The Mayor and Cr Spexrs have been appointed to select a suitable instrument.
