COASTAL SHIPPING.
DISPUTE SETTLED. At a conference of representatives of the Merchant Service Guild and Shipowners’ Federation held on Tuesday a settlement of the dispute was arrived at. All the masters and mates of the smaller coastal vessels returned to work on Tuesday alternoon, after a deadlock which started on October sth. Among the concessions made by the owners are the following: —£ r per mouth, with a few exceptions, above the Arbitration Court Award ; an agreement to restrict the working of overtime to a minimum, and the writing-up of the ship’s papers at the office I,j:- .■;• >n an board. All officers formerly employed are to be reinstated. The shipping dispute commenced on October au d there has not been a boat at the local wharf since October 7th, until Tuesday, when the Wairau arrived with a load of coal from Pupouga. of the South arrived on Wednesday with a small cargo of general merchandise from Wellington. The reason for her not having a full load was because the majority of the shippers in Wellington were unaware that she had resumed running. Both the <2nee 11 of the South and the Wairau sailed last night, hemp laden, for Wellington. The yueen of the South is expected on Saturday with a large cargo of general merchandise, and it is probable the Gertie will also arrive this week.
