COASTAL SHIPPING DISPUTE.
Christchurch, Oct. 31
There appears to be a general feeling'amongst masters and mates of the small coastal steamers outside of Wellington iu favour of resuming work until such time as the ballot of the officers of the Union Company and other large steamer owners regarding the owners offer to them is completed. One officer stated that he was only expressing the opinion of a number of mates who were extremely dissatisfied with the manner iu which the guild affairs were being conducted. No ballot of the masters and mates of the small vessels had been taken to ascertain whether they should come out or not. A number of men had resigned from their vessels In Wellington, and the others had followed suit as a matter of loyalty to the guild. It is stated that general dissatisfaction exists among members of the guild not resident iu Wellington at the way iu which a few members were
“ running the show ” without informing outside members of what they were doing or what the real position of affairs was. One officer remarked that the Wellington minority seemed to run matters to suit themselves, and appeared not to consult the general body of members of the guild.
