Auckland, Oct. 30. A man named S. Francis, now employed by the Auckland Gas Company, has received a message from His Majesty the King to the effect that he desires to personally center on him the decoration for conspicuous bravery. Francis, at great risk to his own life, descended a pit and rescued his two mates from being overcome by poisonous fumes. Francis leaves for England in December. Christchurch, Oct. 30. The police raided a big two-up school at Sockburn yesterday. There were about forty men present, and it is understood that a large number of the players were identified. On the approach of the detectives the alleged gamblers took to their heels, but half a dozen were captured.
