The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, October 26, 1911. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
When Mr Newman delivered his pre-sessioual addiessat Foxton, he was waited upon by a deputation consisting of Messrs Vile and Farmer with reference to the desired alterations at the Himatangi railway station, where the SaudonFoxton tram joins the Government railways. Mr Newman personally inspected the locality, and as the result of representations made to the Department, has received a communication from the Minister for Railways to the effect that instructions have been given to have the necessary alterations carried out, and the work will be put in hand at an early date. In view of the increased traffic at this station and its importance, as a stock centre, the settlers making use of it will appreciate the improvements and alterations which the Department are to carry out.
The Band for Settlement Amendment Bill, introduced in the House yesterday, is to reduce the cost of paying lor estates compulsorily taken. The procedure whereby the compensation is based upon the taxing valuation of the land is proposed to be abolished, and the Court is to determine the true and fair value of the land without making any addition thereto by
reason of the fact that it is to be taken compulsorily unless the area is not less than 2000 acres of first class land or its equivalent. The present limitation is one thousand acres of first-class land.
