VICTORIA COLLEGE STUDENTS AT SHANNON.

(Own Correspondent.)

At Shannon, on Saturday evening, two students from Victoria College, Wellington, addressed a meeting in the open air on the subject of No-License. There was a large and good-natured crowd around the speakers. They received a good hearing, and a vote of thanks at the close. Mr Kennedy, M.A., L.L.8., was the first to speak, and carried the sympathies of the crowd with him. Mr McKldowuey, M.A., L.L.8., who followed, was last year vicepresident of the Victoria College Debating Society, and runner-up iu the debating contests. Needless to say, he also was well received. Mr J. Barclay introduced the speakers. On Sunday evening, at 5.15, the students again addressed a fair audience iu the Druids’ Hall. Mr A. Saunders presided. The speakers dealt particularly with the tac-tics of the trade —re newspaper articles which the unthinking might imagine were written by the literary stall, instead of being purely trade advertisements. He said they had money to pay for misleading advertisements iu the papers, but they would not come out iu the open lor a fair fight. The misleading reports about Maine were also explained at considerable length, showing that Maine had not revolted ; had not overthrown prohibition, but had re-affirmed it by a majority of 770 odd. At the close the speakers received a hearty vote of thanks.
