FOXTON BOWLING CLUB.
The formal opening of the green took place yesterday afternoon under not very favourable weather conditions, which no doubt prevented other club representatives from being present. The inclement weather caused the committee to postpone the opening last week. A large marquee was erected in which the ladies committee prepared afternoon tea. Since last season a croquet lawn has been laid down for the ladies and was played upon for the first time yesterday, and pronounced to be in first-class order. Mr P. J. Hennessy, president, in declaring the green open, referred to the social benefits such an institution conferred upon the ladies and gentleman of the community and hoped the season would be a successful f one. He referred to the improvements which had been earned out since last season. He then called upon Miss Hennessy to “throw up the jack’ ’ and deliver the first bowl which was done very correctly, amidst applause. The croquet lawn was then visited and Mrs Alex. Ross had the honour to drive the first ball through the hoop andA. this portion of the ground was declared open. Rinks were then picked by Messrs Hennessy and Hornblow and some exciting bowling resulted. The green was a little heavy as a result of the rains, but was otherwise in tip-top order and reflected credit upon the caretaker, Mr Spring. The ladies supplied afternoon tea which was much appreciated by bowlers and visitors. The following are the results of the picked rinks, scores of the other rinks were not handed in : Munro Barber Walker Spring Hornblow Woods Witchell(s) 15 Stuunell (s) 20 Ross Whibley Hopper Petrie Clemett Rimmer Stiles (s) 17 Hennessy (s) 30 There were a number of beginners on the ground and they shaped very promisingly. The older hands have not yet got into form. There should be some exciting games in the club competitions this year.
The club desire to thank the t ladies for their generous assistance yesterday.
Messrs Hennessy, Rimmer, Whibley and Petrie have challenged Messrs Spring, G. Barber, Woods and Stunnell to a game on Saturday. The challenged promise the challengers a real good drubbing.
