SHORTAGE OF LABOUR.
“The question of the shortage of labour is one that requires immediate attention both by Government and employers of labour," states the executive of «,hc Now Zealand Employers’ Federation, in its annual report. “The Chief Inspector of Eabour in this year’s report deals with the matter, and expresses grave doubts as to the possibility of securing suitable hands for our factories from Great Britain. Even though that has to be admitted, your executive is of the opinion that one of the Dominion’s greatest needs is a progressive immigration policy, and although it may take the form of inducing and assisting families to come to New Zealand for the purpose of going on the laud, the result in a comparatively short lime will be that more workers will be available for work in our trades and industries. It is certainly inimical to the best interests of the Dominion to see some of our products, such as those handled in our jam and preservingfactories, going to waste, and to realise that many thousands of pouuds’ worth of goods have to be imported owing to the tact that workers are not available to enable manufacturers to meet the demand for local productions.”
