JOHNSON’S ESTIMATE OF
THE “HOPES.”
Paris, Sept. 15
Jack Johnson says he expects to retire from the ring unbeaten. He expressed himsell very confidently on the subject when he said: “There is no prospect of anyone ever licking me, 1 will put in another year polishing off all those who think they have a chance. I will then keep my theatrical engagements, and come back here and open a gymnasium.
Johnson also offered a sarcastic suggestion ; “Pick half a dozen ‘hopes,’ ” said he, “and let them contest the title in France, England, America and Australia. It would make it more interesting perhaps, it I were to buy a big championship belt, and referee the fights myself.” Johnson continues to vent his soreness against America, where, he says, they don’t appreciate real talent.
“At first,” said the big black, “I thought I would like to settle in England, but I think Paris is more congenial.”
