THE ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES.
The Boundaries Commissions, after dealing with petitions in connection with their first definition ot electoral boundaries, have now issued au amended report. The statement available to the press does not define the alterations in detail, but there is sufficient information to give a clear idea of the concessions that have been made to the petitioners. One of the localities upon which attention had centred a good deal was Te Aroha, the northern tourist resort, the inclusion of which in the Ohinemuri electorate meant that the three hotels in the town would be deprived of their licenses. This, it was stated, would considerably affect the prosperity of the town as a tourist resort. The Commissioners went into the matter fully, and, the petition of the Te Aroha Council and Chamber of Commerce was complied with, Te Aroha being retransferred to the Taurauga electorate.
Apparently also the Katikati protest against inclusion in the Ohinemuri electorate has been practically successful, and here again a “half-way” tourist hotel is reinstated in the “licensed” district of Taurauga. In Mr Massey’s electorate of Franklin, Pukekohe, which objected to transference to Rauglan, is put back again into its former electorate.
The name of the Raugitikei electorate, which has been considerably altered, has been changed to Waimarino, aud the Manawatu electorate assumes the name of Raugitikei.
The Commission found it impossible to re establish the townships along the Manawatu Hue, as far north as Plimmerlou, in the Otaki electorate, and iu the case of the Hutt concessions have been made to the extent of giving back to the Hutt that portion along the hillside of the railway line towards Moonshine that was taken into the Wellington Suburbs aud Country electorate.
In the South Island the name of the Geraldine electorate has been changed to that of Temuka. In their report the South Island Commissioners made one comment. They state that it was found that the boundaries of the Tuapeka and Taieri electorates had to be so altered, as to render either name unsuitable, aud so the commission decided to name the newlydefined district Otago Central, as belter describing the same. It was also decided, as the Geraldine electorate had been altered so as to exclude Geraldine town and most of the country, that the electorate should be renamed “Temuka.” The North Island Commissioners have no comment to make.
