BULB SHOW.
The local Horticultural Society was very unfortunate in the weather conditions for their inaugural Bulb Show held in the Masonic Hall yesterday afternoon and evening. During both afternoon and evening it was bitterly cold, and this fact undoubtedly kept a very large number at their own firesides, who otherwise would have attended the Show. In the afternoon the attendance was very small indeed, but a very fair crowd turned up iu the evening, and had the weather been favourable it is reasonable to assume that the accommodation of the Masonic Hall would have been found totally inadequate. Owing to the small attendance in the afternoon, the Show was not officially opened until the evening. This ceremony was performed by the President, Mr A. Speirs. The number of entries in the different classes were not large, but the blooms exhibited were, taken alround, very fine specimens. The general idea was that the Show was held a little bit late in the season, and had it been held earlier a much greater number of exhibits would have been received. From an educational point of view the Show was of great value, and it is to be hoped that the Society will see its way to make it an annual fixture.
A very successful exhibitor was Mrs Harris, of Palmerston North, who practically “ scooped the pool ” in the classes in which she exhibited. Mrs Harris has been a successful exhibitor at a number of shows iu this district, including Levin, Otaki and Palmerston N. Considering it was the first bulb show held locally, Foxton exhibitors are to be congratulated on the quality of the blooms shown.
Messrs Cooper, Ltd., of Wellington, had a very fine display of beautiful blooms, and booked a large number of orders for bulbs. As a result of this, there should be a far better exhibition by local growers next year. All arrangements in connection with the Show were admirably carried out, aud reflect great credit on those responsible. All the stewards aud assistants worked like trojans, and their enthusiasm was responsible for the success of the (unction. The energetic president, Mr Speirs, was here, there and everywhere, and he was ably backed up by the secretary, Mr Patterson, stewards, assistants and committee. The tea room was under the capable management of Mrs W. S. Stewart.
During the evening Mr Betty’s orchestra contributed several selections, Mesdames Greig aud Clemett sang a duet and Mrs Robinson also contributed a vocal item. Needless to say, the above were greatly appreciated by those present. The nail driving competition for Mr Perreau’s wedding cake resulted in a tie between Misses Speirs and Symons. The takings amounted to £s 3s 6d, made up as follows: Door receipts £3 19s 6d, entrance fees £2 3s fid, competitions 17s 90, tea room 16s, and button holes 6s pd. PRIZE LIST.
