“ALAS, POOR FOXTON !”

Under the above heading the Levin Chronicle replies to our recent comments auent the water supply criticism “The weak spot in the Herald’s article is that Foxton is still waterless though it has a Town Hall and a municipal gasworks. The water supply has c been considered and deemed unnecessary for the present, but the municipal hall and the gasworks had to be secured at all costs. ‘Give us each week our moving pictures, and also a copious rainfall’ seems to be the petition of Foxton. If Foxton as a whole is satisfied with such a condition of affairs it is Foxton’s affairs ; but only insofar as Foxton keep it so. When Foxton’s representatives come pattering to other boroughs and waste their time and try their patience with proposals which Foxton’s council has not the courage to give effect to the cause for complaint broadens. One sapient councillor at Foxton, we noticed by a recent report, said that the fact of the value of his property having been increased by several hundreds of pounds made him averse from going to the bur- "i gtsses with any more loan proposals ! A municipal Solon, this ! Because Foxton’s financial standing has been improved in late years, and inasmuch as Councillor Coley is to be asked to pay an additional £ 1 taxes per annum, the burgesses who elect him must continue to dilute their drink (in dry periods) with the flax-stained waters of the Manawatu. Foxton is welcome to the municipal hall which gives it cause for exultation over Levin. We certainly could do with a better hall in Levin, but it is better by far that we should have our present high pressure water supply and a hall that is only fair, than we should exude pride in a huge municipal hall through a clogged epidermis.”
