CONCERT AT WHITAUNUI.
The last of a series of concerts organised by the employees of Whitauuui, Ltd., with the hearty co-operation of Mr and Mrs Greig, was held in the spacious dining room last night. The interior of the building was charmingly decorated with greenery, bunting and evergreen flax blades and silken hemp. The programme was supplied by Foxton and Shannon talent. The latter consisted of a clever troupe called the “ Pierrots,” whose quaint and uniform “get up” was very’ effective. The cramped “ stage ” accommodation spoilt the grouping, and the performers were practically among the audience. We snould like to see the “Pierrots” included in a local entertainment, and if such were arranged, we can assure them of a good reception. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr Greig, the Rev. Mr Aitkeu occupied the chair. The first part of the programme was provided by Foxton performers, and was opened by an instrumental duet (piano and violin), by Misses Jenks and Cook. Songs were contributed by Mesdames McKenzie, Hall, Misses Aitken and McDonald, Messrs Kingsley, Hornblow, Collins, Yates, and Stevens, duets, by Mesdauies Clemett and Greig, Mrs Hall and Miss McDonald, Mesdames Boyesand J. Robinson ; Mrs Greig contributed a monologue, “ The Game of Life ; recitations by Master Burr and Mr F. D. Whibley. The “Pierrots” contributed the following programme, nearly all the items' of which were deserviugly encored'. Opening chorus, “The Sunflower and the Sun,” Miss E. Smith; glee, “ Sweet and Low,” company ; “ Mouths set to music,” Mr Tilling; song, “Up in a toy balloon,” Miss Laurvig ; quartette, “ Pushed it through the window,” Messrs Bovls, Tilling, Batchelor and Couper; comic song, “ That top note,” Mr Bovis; song and chorus, “That jammy face,” Miss M. Mouleith ; song, “ The Baby on the Shore,” Mr J. W. Batchelor ; song, “ Shadows,” Miss Laurvig.
Accompaniments were played by Mrs Boyes, Miss Jenks and Miss McDonald and the Pierrots were accompanied by a Shannon lady instrumentalist. Refreshments were provided and much appreciated, after which the Chairman, on behalf of the management, stated that as a result of the concerts between £5 and £6 would be handed to the Palmerston District Hospital. He also thanked the performers for their assistance, and particularly to Mr and Mrs Greig for the interest they had taken in the functions. The National Anthem concluded the concert.
