FOOTBALL.

REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY

MATCHES

WAIRARAPA DEFEATS HOROWHENUA.

The Wairarapa and Horowhenua senior “rep” teams met at Mastertcn on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine and the game was an interesting one at times, being chiefly noticeable for the splendid rushes of the Waharapa forwards. Had Wairarapa had their best forward division in the field Horowheuua would have been beaten by a much bigger margin. With forwards like R. and H. McKenzie, Hodge, and Newlands in the team, the visitors would have been run off their feet. The Horowheuua pack was never in the hunt with the home vanguard, being outplayed at all points. The play of the home backs was a mixture of good and bad. The Horowheuua backs gave a wretched exhibition. They fumbled the ball repeatedly, collared badly, and though they passed the ball about at times it was often thrown erratically. The visitors, however, put up a very creditable fight. Brough opened the scoring account for Wairarapa by registering a try, which N. McKenzie had no difficulty in converting. Shortly after, from a passing rush, which by the way, was the only bit of decent passing during the game, N. Winiata scored a splendid try for Horowheuua. Rawiri failed with the kick. Horowheuua kept up the attack, and from a mark Rawiri increased the visiting team’s score to six. The Wairarapa towards now took a hand in the game, and led Horowheuua a merry dance. Just before halftime N. McKenzie intercepted a pass, and, after a good run scored. The kick at goal was a failure. When half-time sounded the score stood :

W airarapa ... 8 Horowheuua . . 6 In the second spell the Wairarapa forwards took charge of things, and had the visitors at their mercy. The home team put on nineteen points, tries being scored by Brough (3), Barry, and Bond, two of which N. McKenzie converted. Before the call of time Rawiri broke away with the ball and scored a brilliant try, which he converted himself. There was no further score, and the game ended :

Wairarapa ... 27 Horowheuua ... 11 Mr E. McKenzie refereed.

AUCKLAND 16 v. WEL LINGTON 9.

The annual interproviucial Rugby match between Auckland and Wellington was played at Wellington on Saturday afternoon under ideal weather conditions, and before an attendance of ten thousand spectators. Wellington had the advantage in the first spell and registered nine points to their opponents nil. On changing ends things were reversed and Auckland simply ran over the home team, and kept them busy defending lor the greatest part of the spell. When time was called the Aucklanders had scored x 6 points, thus being victorious over Wellington by 16 points to 9.

CANTERBURY EASILY DEFEATED BY TARANAKI.

The sixth match between Canterbury and Taranaki “rep” teams was played at Christchurch on Saturday in beautiful weather, the attendance was large. The first spell was of a very even

nature and at balf-time Taranaki had a 3 points lead. In the second spell, however, Taranaki outclassed their opponents in every department, and at the call of time had compiled 24 points to their opponents 3. Mr P. Millar, of Dunedin, was referee.
