TOWN CLERK S REPORT.

At last night’s Council meeting the town clerk’s report was read as follows;—

“In the earlier part of the mouth the men were engaged in spreading and breaking metal in front of N.Z. Shipping Coy’s stores, and foot of Wharf street ; this work has now been completed and the Shipping Coy., have paid ,£25 towards cost of same. The remainder of the time they have been working at the gas services, with the exception of Cook, a day and a half taking out soil for engine room floor at Town Hall. The Reserves Committee at a meeting on Fiiday, 25th August, in the Avenue, decided the vicarage trees should either be lowered 20ft or removed altogether, and a notice to that effect was served upon the occupier. On the same day the Public Works Committee inspected the drains in Spring street and Norbiton road, and decided when funds permits to remove culvert at corner of Spring street and Avenue and leave it an open drain, and at Signal’s corner pipes to be replaced with larger ones, or a concrete bridge, and the drain from hill in Norbiton road to be cleaned out down to Signal’s corner. Mr Carter has borrowed the road grader for his own private use, and expressed his willingness to pay a charge per day, to be fixed by the Council, and I would suggest that the amount be 10s per day. In view of the fact that the time of the office staff Is continually being taken up by persons applying for copies of entries on the Valuation Roll, and that in other places such information is not given gratis, I would suggest that the Council make a nominal charge of 6d per entry with a minimum ot is. 1 recommend ordering 10 waggons of limestone as a quantity will be wanted for front and side passage of Town Hall, and several ratepayers are also wanting some, and the stock in the yard is very low. I would suggest the tarring of Avenue and Wharf street footpaths as soon as men are finished with gas services. I have inspected the road formed up by Mr Carter, and find that he has made a very fair job of it.’’ —The report was adopted with the exception of charge ot 10s per day for road grader and recemmendation to tar the Avenue footpath. The charge for road grader is to be 5s for first day and 2s 6d for subsequent days.
