Statistics compiled under the direction of President Joseph Smith show that there are now 8,228 Mormons in the United Kingdom, and that 963 converts were made last year. Of the latter 555 emigrated to Utah.

A meeting of ladies interested in giving the children a treat in commenoratiou of the Coronation will be held in the Council Chamber at 3 p.m., on Saturday next. The engine for the Town Hall is in Foxton, and a commencement will be made with the erection of same as soon as the engine room, at present being prepared, is completed.

The Chairman of the Manawatu County Council said at the meeting on Tuesday that he had ascertained at the Counties’ Conference that County Councils now had power to compel any one putting roads through their properties ior subdivision purposes to metal those roads —a power which they previously did not possess. In our report of the proceedings in connection with the theft of whitebait before the local police court on Tuesday, it was stated that the accused unsuccessfully endeavoured to sell the fish to Mr White, of Whyte’s Hotel. This is not so, and as a matter of fact the accused was noton Mr White’s premises at all on the day in question.

At Tuesday night’s Council meeting, the common seal of the Mayor, Councillors and burgesses of the Borough of Foxton was affixed to the debentures issued in respect of the loan of ,£1250 from the New Zealand State Guaranteed Advances office, for part cost of construction of the Foxton Beach road, and the Mayor and Borough Treasurer were authorised to sign same.

In the course of a conversation with a Palmerston pressman, Mr A. B. A short discussion followed the lecture, and several questions were asked and answered. A vote of thanks to the speaker and chair; man concluded the meeting. Says the Devin Chronicle “ Whether or not there is to be trouble among those engaged iu the flax industry around Shannon, Koputaroa, and Foxton remains to be seen, but an important conference of flax hands is, we understand, shortly to be held at Shannon, when the workers’ conditions will be thoroughly discussed. The conference is likely to be largely attended. At the present time the secretary to the Union is busy enrolling members, and, it is stated, he is finding a ready response to his appeal. ‘ Hitherto,’ said a responsible worker who has been engaged in the mills for several years, ‘ there has been no proper organisation. ’ Asked whether the men intended to strike, the operative replied : ‘ No. But the men are thoroughly dissatisfied with their present conditions generally. The old union fizzled out, and we are determined to re-organise it on a staple basis. Until this is done, and we can go to the masters with a united front, we shall not get redress.’ The conference will meet in an evening, and important resolutions will be submitted. Mr Lazarette notifies the arrival of a consignment of schnapper and crayfish. A committee meeting of the local Bowling Club will be held in the Council Chambers at 3.30 p.m. to-morrow.

A meeting ot the Borough Council will be held on Monday night to decide what form the opening ceremony of the Coronation Town Hall will take. The death occurred at Masterton on Tuesday of Mrs L. Braggins, sister-in-law of Messrs F. Spiers, of Foxton. The deceased was one of Masterton’s oldest residents.

At the fortnightly meeting of the local Druids Lodge, held last night, the Arch Druid, Bro Fuller, tendered his resignation, and Bro. P. T. Robinson was elected to fill the vacancy.

Death has removed another early settler on this coast in the person of Miss Woods, of Shannon. The deceased was a sister of Mr G. N. Wood. The interment took place last Saturday, Op Sunday evening next, in the Masonic Hall, at 8 o’clock, the Rev. G. Y. Woodward and Mr Hornblow will speak on the subject of social reform. The chair will be occupied by the Mayor. Admission is free, and there will not be a collection. We understond that Mr Stokoe, of Feilding, the contractor for painting the scenery for the Coronation Hall, has completed same, and it is now ready for erection. In our next issue we will give a description of the scenery.

We are informed that the carpenters will finish their work at the Coronation Town Hall next week. The painters and decorators are busy on the interior of the building. The central stairway leading to the dress circle is almost completed. The interior ot the hall presents a very artistic appearance.

Manawatu County Council consider they will have no difficulty in complying with Major-General Godley’s request for suitable buildings for drilling Territorials. There are halls at Carnarvon, Himatangi, Sandon and Awahuri, which it was thought could be placed at the disposal of the Defence Department.
