Foxtou won the toss and played up hill with the sun at their backs, a slight breeze and down hill gave Hui Mai the advantage. From a scrum Cobbler seized the leather and scored his second try. No goal resulted. Foxtou then lost heart, their backs letting them down by bad collaring and weak fielding. Hui Mai now started to throw the ball about, and quickly added three more tries, Cobbler getting two and Whareo one. N. Bevan converting one. The first spell ended; Hui Mai 19—Foxton 0.
