METHODIST CHURCH.

The anniversary services in connection with ■ the local Methodist Church were held on Sunday. The singing and preaching were appropriate to the occasion. Last night an old fashioned tea and after meeting were held. The tea was served in the school room. Four long tables were provided, and these simply groaned under the weight of good and wholesome edibles. The attendance at the tea was very large. The lady members and particularly the young women, were most attentive waitresses, and ample justice was done to-the good things provided. The aftermeeting was held in the church and again the attendance was large. The meeting was presided over by the Rev. Mr Coatsworth and on the platform were the Rev. Mr Aitken (Presbyterian) and Mr Maiden (in charge of the Shannon Methodist Church). Anthems were rendered by the choir with fine effect. By the way, we believe the Methodists, who have always been noted for their service of song—possess the premier local choir and the concerted items last night were very fine. Vocal items were contributed by Miss Honore, Messrs Chrystal, Rimraer and Sherratt. Miss Honore and Mr Stiles presided at the organ. In his address, the Rev. Mr Aitken dealt with the influence of the Bible on the home and state. He said a statement had been made that the Bible was only read in forty per cent, of the homes of the Dominion. This was a regrettable state of affairs and he strongly advocated the Bible being read in our State Schools. Mr Maiden delivered a short address on the lessons of the anniversary. The meeting closed with prayer.
