SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the local State School Committee was held on Thursday night. Present; Messrs Hornblow (chairman) Betty (secretary), Geo. Coley, Hunt, Henderson, Procter, Read and Alex. Sneirs.

The visitors (Messrs Read and Procter), reported that the school and outbuildings were in a satisfactory condition; certain minor repairs had been effected; the small gate leading into Duacan Street required repairing, also repairs to the horse enclosure fence and some filling was needed on the path to the front entrance and near the gate in Duncan Street. The matter of procuring grawii and limestone was left in the hands of Mr Coley and repairs to gate with Mr Speirs ; Mr Hunt to supervise repairs to horse paddock fence. The question of levelling the school ground was again raised and after discussion Messrs Coley, Speirs and Hunt were appointed a sub-committee to go into the matter and submit an estimate for same at the next meeting. The headmaster’s report was read and stated inter alia that the average attendances for the past four weeks were: 2867, ayS's 295, and 293'8, the average attendance for the whole period was 288'4 out of an average roll number of 3x5; the roll number at present is 322. During the jfc period 16 pupils have been admitted and seven withdrawn. The second term examination will be completed this week. The term holidays commence on Monday, September 4th, and the school re-opens on Monday, September xxth. Mr Hunt reported that the fencing at the north end of the school had been carried out satisfactorily. It was decided to forward the'' flag to the Education Board for repairs as suggested by the Board secretary. Accounts were passed for payment. Messrs Speirs and Betty were appointed visitors for the month.
