DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER.

There died at the Otaki Hospital on Sunday night one of the oldest residents ot the West Coast ot the North Island in the person of Mr H. F. Fagar. The late Mr Fager was born in Sydney on 4th July, 1836. In 1842 the family came to New Zealand and in 1854 to Otaki, where Mr Fagar, sen., opened a large general store, and after his father’s death Mr Fager returned to Otaki, where he has resided ever since. He was a member of the first Highways Board on the West Coast of this island, member of the first Horowhenua County Council. Then, when the Otaki Road Board was formed, its first secretary. Mr Fagar was elected and occupied that position until his death. His wife, a Native chieftainess, predeceased him many years, but he is survived by a daughter, a grandson, several great grandchildren, and also by his brother, Mr Geoffrey Fager of Otaki, and his sister, Mrs Smart, of Sydney. He probably had a more intimate knowledge of the former history and development of Otaki and the West Coast generally than any other resident of the district, and he was often referred to when opinions differed in regard to matters regarding the ancient history of Otaki, and Kapiti and various events of long ago.
