THE GREAT STRIKE.
OUTLOOK MORE PROMISING. RESUMPTION OF WORK. COST OF THE STRIKE. Eondon, Aug. 13. A general resumption of work is expected on Monday, although there are a number of misunderstandings regarding the precise terms of the agreement. Most of the factories are re-opening. The railway carters declare that the awards do not affect them, and the carters of five ot the principal railway companies have struck work. Great unrest prevails In other avocations, and numerous small strikes have occurred.
Eiverpool is virtually under military rule. Earge quantities of provisions which were blocked atjEdgehill station were released by the military, and hundreds of lorries, many ot them driven by the merchants themselves, and escorted by the Scots Greys and the Warwickshire Regiment, obtained possession of the produce. The strikers were undemonstrative.
The week’s strike has, approximately, cost Eondon ,£1,500,000. The latest development is among the window cleaners, thousands of whom have struck work. The situation at Manchester is grave, where 8,000 goods railway men have ceased work, and 500 porters and cleaners struck to-day. The men have no particular grievance, but are acting out of sympathy with the others. In Eiverpool the butchers are closing their shops, owing to the meat famine. The cotton industry is also seriously affected. At Glasgow the strikers detached a trolley wire and smashed a number of tram cars. The police arrested twenty of the strikers. A partial tramway service is being maintained, the inspectors and other officials, under police guard, working the trams.
