HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the committee of the Foxton Horticultural Society was held in the Council Chamber last night. Mr Alex. Speirs (President), occupied the chair and there was a large attendance of the committee present. Correspondence of a routine nature was read and dealt with.

It was decided that the prizes for birds eggs at the forthcoming Spring Show be as follows• Best collection of blackbird, thrush and sparrows eggs, limited to those residing within a three-miles radius of the town of Foxton, first prize, Mr Gower’s special is, second prize, Mr Thynne’s special 10s 6d. In addition to the above two special prizes of £1 is each, donated by Mrs Thynne and Mr Gower will be paid out at the rate of sixpence per hundred. A donation of is from Mr Shailler was allotted to the best collection of twelve varieties of sweet peas and best rose, xos 6d in each class.

Accounts amounting to 17s 6d were passed for payment Mr Hopper’s special prize (watering can), was allotted to class 86 in Bulb Show, and Mr Perreau’s special (cake) will be competed for at the same show. On the motion of Mr Woods, seconded by Mr Witchell, it was decided that the Society give special prizes ot 10s for first, and 5s second, for best garden plots by boys and girls attending the Foxton, Moutoa and Himatangi schools. Separate prizes lor each school.

The appointment ot judges for the Bulb Show was left in the hands of Mrs Greig, the Chairman and Secretary. It was decided that ladies only be appointed stewards in connection with the Bulb Show, and the following appointments were made :—Mesdames Adams, Greig, Boyes and Symons and Misses Signal, Speirs and Ross. Mrs Stewart was appointed to take charge of the tea room. Messrs Kempster, Newth and Boyes were appointed a competitions committee. The Secretary was instructed to make application for the Town Hall for Nov. 22nd and 23rd, for Spring Show. It was decided on the motion of Mrs Greig, seconded by Miss Ross, that a social evening for the members be held in the Masonic Hall on September xst. Mr Boyes donated 10s 6d as a special prize for best decorated table at Spring Show. Prize to be awarded by popular vote. The catalogue for Spring Show as drawn up by the special committee was approved. Other routine business was transacted, and the meeting rose.
