The Secretary of the local Football Club received a telegram at 1.30 p.m. to-day advising that Tainui was unable to get a team and consequently were forfeiting to Foxton.
At Stratford on Thursday, Taranaki defeated the Maori touring team by 17 points to 16. The Maoris were unfortunate in being beaten, the game being won by Taranaki by a penalty goal on the call of time.
The Auckland Rugby Union has suggested September i6tb as the date for the Ranfurly Shield match with Poverty Bay.
A rugby football match is played annually between the Wellington Referees’ Association aud the Manawatu Referees’ Association. It is to be played this year as a “curtain raiser’’ to the Auckland-Wellingtou match on 9th September. The secretary of the Horowhenua Referees’ Association (Mr W. R. Burge) is in receipt of a letter from Mr C. D, Fraser, secretary to the Manawatu Referees’ Association, wherein a combined team of ManawatuHorowheuua referees is suggested. Tom Parata, Kingi Tahlwi, J. Desmond, A. Musgrove aud W. R, Burge are suggested by Mr Fraser as possible representatives of the Horowhenua referees. The selection of Horowhenua’s five, however, is to be left to the local associations.
