“ BRACE THE TIGER.”

DEATH, OF A NOTORIOUS BRIGAND. One of the most famous figures on the stage of Ottoman outlawry life has just been killed in an encounter with Turkish troops. It is the notorious Voivode Brage, half brigand, half rebel, a man of astounding courage and of a most atrocious disposition. He was of Bulgarian origin, and in the country of King Ferdinand there are few who do not consider him to be a sort of national hero. Many are now deploring his death. Brage killed many hundreds of persons during his long brigand existence. Bloodthirsty like a tiger (he was popularly known as “Brage the Tiger”), he often massacred for the mere sake of seeing human blood flow. In some provinces of Koumelia he acquired such a terrible reputation as an “ avenger of wrongs ” that the civil and police authorities trembled at his name, and frequently refused to pursue him. They preferred to suffer dismissal or even imprisonment rather than undertake anything which might excite his anger or suspicion. It is said he had on his body over a hundred wounds received during the endless affrays he had had with the Turks.
