ADDRESS BY ACTING-PRIME MINISTER.
DUNEDIN, July 4. Sir James Carroll addressed a large gathering of citizens this evening and leceivcd an enthusiastic reception. Ho dealt generally with the assertions of tho Opposition, replying to statements made by Mr Massey at Hastings, and aided (hat the Opposition had never put forward a constructive policy. It, had all been destructive. Sir James asked vliy was Hie jphraso “Maori landlordism’ used? Was there any difference between that, aml Pakeha. landlordism? If they didn’t want the former, why, he askou, did they waul the latter? The phrase was used to stir up prejudice in the minds of white people against tho Maori people. Sir James was accorded a vote of thanks and conlidonco in the present administration.
