CORRESPONDENCE.
(TO the editor.) Sir, —I have read, with a good deal of interest, the full list of those who contributed the best part of ,£250 without which it would be impossible to obtain the Government subsidy of for the Coronation Hall. The Mayor and Councillors have made a very great double To give up so much of one’s time to Council affairs shows that our present Councillors are prepared to put the public good before selfinterest. Will you permit me to say, sir, that the cause of Foxton’s backwardness in the past has been due to selfishness on the part of our so-called public men. I hope we shall fully appreciate the public-spiritedness of our present Council —'the best Council Foxtou has ever possessed —and I know what lam talking about. But that list, sir. I looked lor names on it of men who owe all they have to Foxton, yet never a sixpence did they give. I am told that one local millionaire, when asked lor a sub, committed the thing to a place where the parsons say the lire burneth eternally. Contrast such action with the generosity of the despised Chow, who was handicapped with a poll lax which the other fellow escaped. I only want to say, sir, how proud I am of our Council, who are doing so much to push Foxtou ahead. May their efforts in connection with water and drainage meet with success, and their names go down to posterity honoured as they deserve to be. Thanking you in anticipation, —I am, etc., Te Awahou.
