WATER SCHEME.
The Mayor, at last night’s meeting of the Council, outlined the trip to Shannon by councillors regarding a water supply, particulars of which had been published by the Herald. He did not think there was at the present time anything for the Council to discuss until a meeting had been held in Shannon, and when the views of the meeting there were known then the position would be more clear. The Mayor stated that he had gone into the matter of probable cost of laying gin. mains from Shannon to Foxton according to a previous estimate laid down by Mr Climie, and supposing the distance from the reservoir were fourteen miles, the cost per mile would be about £I2OO, making £16,800, and the reticulating the town for water and drainage would amount to ,£14,394, making the cost of connecting £31,194. This would not include the amount necessary for purchasing catchment area, nor building reservoirs. It would be readily seen that the cost of the scheme was going to be heavy, and it would be a question at a later stage whether it was not too large at the present time for the Borough. An opportunity would be given later to discuss this important proposal.
