Correspondence was read from Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., again asking that Wharf and Harbour Streets and also the wharf be better lighted.—lt was decided that the question of a gas lamp at the intersection of Wharf and Harbour Streets will be dealt with when the extension of mains is being considered. From Fred Elton, applying for opening night of Coronation Hall for a picture show, and offering 25 per cent, of gross takings in lieu of rent. —It was decided to deal with application at the same time as others.
From the Valuer-General, advising that the new valuation roll will be forwarded at an early date. The pouudkeeper reported that during the month ot May, 28 horses, 16 head of cattle and 40 sheep had been impounded by the ranger, and driving fees amounting to £1 7s had been collected. Accounts amounting to £1324 14s qd were passed for payment. The petition from residents of Johnston and Frances Streets, asking that a lamp be erected to light Frances Street and a footpath formed along Johnston Street from Union Street to Purcell Street, which had, in accordance with the Standing Order, been allowed to lie on the table since last meeting, was again dealt with. —It was decided on the motion of Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Gibbs, that the petitioners of Frances Street be informed that the lamp as asked for cannot be erected at present, as the mains are not run to the point desired, but that a drain will be put in to remove the surface water and that funds will not permit of footpaths being formed in Johnston Street.
Cr Greig was added to the Public Works Committee and his name was removed from the Library Committee.
The inspector of Nuisances reported that a drain in Coley Street was creating a nuisance and asked the Council what steps he should take. —lt was decided on the motion of Cr Gibbs, seconded by Cr Carter, that the Inspector of Nuisances be instructed to take proceedings against owner of drain in Coley Street, Cr Coley alone voting against the motion. Cr Speirs, who in company with Cr Gibbs, represented the Council at a meeting held in Palmerston last week to discuss the question of the erection of a children’s ward in connection with the hospital, briefly reported what had been done at the meeting. He said it had been decided to build a children’s ward at a cost oi /1500 ; had already been promised in Palmerston North. To secure the balance it had been decided to send out subscription lists throughout the Hospital District.
The matter of decorating the Council Chamber on Coronation Day was left in the hands of the Mayor and the Town Clerk. The Council rose at 11.15 p.m.
