MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held on Tuesday. Present: —Crs J. G. Wilson (chairman), T. Masters, G. Kendall, J. Henson, W. Barber, H. H. Hunt, and R. B. McKenzie.
Correspondence was read from : The Minister for Internal Affairs stating that Government will subsidise funds for the erection of a fountain, but not for cost of artesian well or water-trough. From Valuer-General, forwarding following particulars of valuation ;

£1,536,420 £1,147,324 £389,093 The Palmerston Hospital Board wrote, notifying a levy of S 4d for hospital and charitable aid, and X2S id for purchase of site for Old Men’s Home. Mr A. K. Drew, County Treasurer, reported :—Balances ; General account, dr. £55 ns nd; loan account, cr. ,£459 19 s Net credit balance, 7s 3d. Available for expenditure to March 31st, 1912 : Sandon Riding, ,£351 2S 4d ; Mt. Stewart, 5 s 1 Waitohi, £474 10s 8d ; Rongotea, 2s Qd ; Carnarvon, xos 5d ; Kawakawa, ,£593 16s ; Awahou, ,£262 15s 3d; Wlxirokino, ,£122 xs 6d. Accounts totalling 6s 8d (general) and ,£SB 6s 6d (loan) were passed tor payment. The ranger was instructed to keep the roads clear of stock grazing after June 13th. The Council protested against the “ rate and a half ” rate charged on the railways on imported timber for local bodies' use.
Slaughtering licenses renewals were granted to Messrs Jas. McMinu, G. T. Woodroofe and F. Williamson, and new license to 0. F. Cook.
The tender of Mr R. B. Sutton of ,£235 for erecting cottage at Rongotea siding was accepted. It was decided to levy a special rate of i-i6d in the £ for the construction of the road to Foxton beach.
Mr Drew, tramway manager, reported that the traffic was satisfactory, but owing to extra expenditure the credit balance was only £5 15s 2d. The chief items of traffic were ; Grain, tons ; minerals, 56 tons; merchandise, 14624 tons; timber, 23,900 feet; metal, 300 yards ; fares, £7 12s 1 id. Tne new boiler for the engine “ Weka ” had been completed, and the other repairs were well under way. Mr Anderson has started on his new duties, and Mr H. L. Wallace has been appointed acting-guard for three months. The office at the Sanson tram-shed is being built. The mile of 401 b. rails and the first batch of Powderise.d sleepers are to hand.
The overseer reported as follows on the Awahou Riding : —I made an inspection of the road through the Mouloa Estate to Dr Wall’s property, and I would recommend the Council to take the road along the southern boundary of Mr Barber’s property, to where it meets the existing road. I also made an inspection of the two bridges erected by the Moutoa Drainage Board. The bridge is built too narrow to allow a Cambridge roller to pass over it, and should be made wider before being taken over by the Council.
