THUNDERSTORM IN ENGLAND.
London, June 1
A spell of tropical heat culminated in a series of thunderstorms in the Home counties. The streets in many places were flooded.
The Epsom crowd, returning from the races, was in a sorry plight. Lightning killed two policemen and three other race-goers. Although only seven deaths are reported already, many have been severely injured by lightning. Two city churches were struck. The underground railway was flooded.
An extraordinary scene occurred at Bostock’s Jungle at the White City. The thunder infuriated the pumas, who attacked and mauled their lady trainer. The pavilion was crowded with people, who escaped in torrential rain amid a scene of great excitement. The trainer was rescued by attendants using crowbars.
