THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

APRIL GRADING RETURNS. The total number of bales of hemp graded during the mouth of April was 6.478, as compared with 14,528 for the corresponding mouth of last year, a decrease of 8,050 bales. For the twelve mouths ended April 30th, the number graded was 105,478, as compared with 112,000 for the previous twelve months, or a decrease of 6,522 bales. Worked out on a percentage basis, the quantity of each grade dealt with during the month was as follows ; Superior, nil ; fine, 4.66 ; good fair, 48.42 ; fair, 39,8 ; common, 5.82 ; rejected, 0.82 ; condemned, 0.68. During the month, 1590 bales of tow were dealt with, as against 4,515 lot the corresponding mouth of last year, a decrease of 2,925 bales. The number of bales of hemp and tow handled at each port was as under :

The number of bales in each grade and the percentage of output at the ports are as follows ; Fine: Pictou, 97, 100; Dunedin, 12, 4.47 ; Wellington, 117, 4.23; Foxtou, 2.28. Good fair: Wellington, 1540, 55.72 ; Foxtou, 1408, 54.11; Bluff, 65, 34.39; Dunedin, 45, 16.79 ; Auckland, 79, 14.10. Fair: Bluff, 120, 63.28 ; Auckland, 295, 53.21 ; Wellington, 1098, 39,75 ; Foxtou, root, 38,47 ; Dunedin, 49, 18.28. Common: Dunedin, 162, 60.44; Auckland, 116, 20.71 ; Foxtou, 88, 3.38 ; Bluff, 4, 2.11 ; Wellington, 7, 0.25. Rejected; Auckland, 23, 4.10 ; Foxtou, 30, 1.15. Condemned : Auckland, 44, 7.85.

The tow works out as follows ; —First grade: Picton, 29, 100; Foxtou, 296, 43.74; Wellington, 205, 30.10 ; Auckland, 5, 4.06. Second grade: Dunedin, n, 100; Wellington, 476, 69.59 ; Auckland, 57, 46,34; Foxtou, 294, 43.29. Third grade: Bluff, 67, 100 ; Auckland, 47, 38.21 ; Foxtou, 84, 12.37. Condemned : Auckland, 14, 11.38 ; Foxtou, 5, 0.73.
