The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, May 20, 1911. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
We are asked by Area SergeantMajor Dovey to point out that registration for military training in this area (No. 24 ) closes with the Area Sergeant-Major, Defence Office, Palmerston N., at 7 p.m., on 2nd June, 1911, and that all young men, inclusive of Maoris, who had attained 14 years and were under 21 years of age, on the Ist March, 1911, are, irrespective oi distance from town or headquarters, physical infirmities, etc., required to conform to the law. Th .re is, undoubtedly, an impression abroad that the payment of £ 5, inflicted as a penalty for nonregistration, disposes of any further liability regarding military training, but this is not so, and we desire to make it clear that liability for service is in no sense lessened by the payment of fines.
A suggestion was thrown out by Dr. Maudl at the annual meting of the local Horticulture Society on Thursday night, which is worthy of consideration by the committee. It was that the society become a branch of the New Zealand Acclimatisation Society, and as such introduce Into the district such auimais, birds and fish which would be suitable for this district and which the society have fur distribution. As far as we are able to gather the undertaking would not involve the Horticultural Society in any expense but, on the other hand, would extend the society’s functions to the sister branch of animal life.
