LITERARY SOCIETY.
A well attended and enthusiastic meeting was held in the Presbyterian School Hall on Thursday evening for the formation of a literary club. The Rev. G. K. Aitkeu was voted to the chair, and Mr A. McCall appointed' secretary (pro tem). On the motion of Mr J. Ross, seconded by Mr Gibbs, it was resolved to form a society of the kind described, and that it be named the “ Foxton Literary and Debating Society.” A Committee was then appointed to formulate rules for the guidance of the Society, and to arrange a syllabus; this committee to report to a special meeting to be held on Monday evening next. It was decided that the session begin on Tuesday evening, 23rd May, and that Mr Aitkeu read a paper on the‘‘Aims and objects of a Literary Society.” There was great heartiness displayed on the part ot those present and a determination expressed to make the Society a thorough success. It was pointed out that there was to be nothing of a sectarian character introduced, and a welcome was extended to every young man in the town and district to become a member. A pleasant hour was then spent in suggesting subjects for the syllabus.
