INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.
FIRST MEETING OF NEW COUNCIL.
COUNCILLORS WELCOMED BY THE MAYOR.
Mr G. H. Stiles, who was reelected unopposed, was last night installed as Mayor of Foxton for a further terra. The Returning Officer submitted the result of the recent borough election aud the newly elected Councillors made the statutory declaration and took their seats.
The Mayor heartily welcomed all the Councillors to the table. He was especially glad to see all the old Councillors who offered their services to the electors returned for another term. By this the electors showed that they approved of the work done by the Council during the past term. He w'as proud to be again elected to the high office of Mayor. By allowing him to be elected unopposed he took it that the people were perfectly satisfied with his efforts on their behalf during his previous terms, otherwise they would have put someone up to oppose him. He extended a hearty welcome to the new Councillors and said he would do all in his power to make their term on the Council as pleasant as possible. Reviewing the past two years, his Worship said the Council could claim a record in the amount of work that had been carried out. He had had many years’ experience at the Council table and he did not know of any previous Council that had done so much. The biggest thing that would come before the Council during the coming year would be a scheme of water aud drainage for the borough. As they all knew, the Council had put a water and drainage scheme before the ratepayers aud it had been thrown out. He contended that the throwing out of the scheme was mainly due to the people not being educated up to it. He trusted that this year they would be able to evolve a scheme that the ratepayers would sanction. He asked the Councillors to obtain all the information they could on this question in order that when it came before the Council they would be in a position to discuss it thoroughly. Arrangements had just been made for the purchase of a road grader. This he considered was a real good investment and would do a great deal to reduce the cost of upkeep of roads. He impressed on the Councillors the fact that they had limited revenue —only one mouth of the year had passed and had been spent — the roads were in a very bad state, aud consequently the Council would need to “go careful.” He concluded by asking the new Councillors to make themselves acquainted with the Standing Orders, so that the business could be transacted as smoothly and expeditiously as possible. He then asked the Clerk to read the minutes and resumed his seat.
