A TAUMARUNUI HORROR.
SUPPOSED MURDER AND SUICIDE. HALF-CASTES’ LOVE AFFAIR. Auckland, May 1. The Star’s Taumarunui correspondent telegraphs that an awful murder and suicide occurred at midday yesterday on the banks of the Ongarue River, 150 yards from the boat landing, when a young half-caste Maori, Tanina Bell, was supposed to have murdered Anna Thomas, who was also a half-caste, by cutting her throat with a razor. He then cut his own throat with another razor. The tragedy was witnessed by a Mr Harris, who promptly secured the assistance ot the local doctor and police. The bodies were conveyed to the morgue. The tragedy is attributed to jealousy, Bell and the woman having been keeping company.
ANOTHER VERSION. Taihape, May 1. Ina Bell, a half-caste youth, aged 20, and Annie Thomas, a half-caste girl, aged 18, were found dead in a cherry garden on the outskirts ot Taumarunui at midday yesterday, both having their throats cut. It is surmised that Bell, who was keeping company with Thomas, cut her throat in a fit of jealousy and then cut his own. A razor was found on the ground close by. Bell was a prominent footballer. He had attended church that morning, and met Thomas on returning, at about 11.45.
