The population ot the Borough of Foxton, as shown by the recent census, is 1637, an increase of 307 since 1906. The Horticultural Association will meet in the Council Chamber at 8 o’clock to-night to transact important business, F. D. Whibley advertises a 20 acre farm for sale. Also a desirable cottage property, and an acre section.
The next ordinary meeting of the Moutoa Drainage Board will be held on Friday, 28th iust., at 7.45p.m. Business: general. The finder of bag of Triumph motor-bike tools, lost between Palmerston and Foxton, will be rewarded on returning same to this office.
Owing to the fact that only three entries have been received by the Rifle Club tor the StilesGolder competition, the first shoot (to-morrow and Saturday) will take place with sealed handicaps.
An outbreak of measles in the Masterton district is supposed to have been the result of the contact of children with the menagerie of a circus which recently visited the town. The disease is what is known as German measles.
The Borough Council advertises a special order authorising the raising of a special loan of ,£1250 for the purpose of providing part cost of a road from the borough to the Foxton Beach. The order is to be confirmed at a special meeting of the Council on May 23rd.
The Harbour Board advertises tor tenders, closing on May 2nd, lor 33 years lease ot sections at Te Wharangi and in the Sanatorium Block. Conditions of tender and form of lease may be seen at the office ot the Board, and at the Town Clerk's office, Palmerston.
A post mortem on the body of William Blair, aged 20, employed on a farm near ’ Fairlie, Canterbury, who was found dead on Tuesday night in a paddock where he had been working, revealed that death was due to a heavy dinner acting on the heart, which was probably weakened by excessive cigarette smoking. A verdict was returned accordingly. On Thursday evening the annual meeting of parishioners will be held in All Saints’ schoolroom at 8 p.m. The vicar will read his report, Mr Witchell will present the balance-sheet, and the election of churchwardens and vestry will take place. The vicar hopes to see all parishioners present, both old and young, for this is an occasion when all the members of the church may meet to enjoy a social as well as official gathering. The ball under the auspices of the Mauawatu Rowing Club which was to have been held in the Masonic Hall to-morrow night, has, on account of the Municipal election, been postponed until the following Wednesday. Tickets tor same can be obtained from the secretary, Mr S. H. Wanklyn. The prices of admission are : Gentlemen 53, ladies a basket. Electors are reminded that tomorrow they are called upon to elect two members of the Wellington Harbour Board. The candidates offering are Messrs M. Cohen, sitting member, and a gentleman whom we can unhesitatingly recommend to the electors : Mr Abraham of the well-known firm of Messrs Abraham and Williams, of Palmerston N., a gentleman whose name is familiar in commercial circles throughout the province ; Mr Cobb, the wellknown Feilding merchant, and Mr Stubbs, of Palmerston N., are the other two candidates. With this issue Mounsey and Co. advertise a list of the chief items contained in Mr W. C. Howan’s clearing sale, which they are conducting on Monday next, May Ist, commencing at 1 p.m., at his residence. In conjunction with the furniture sale, the auctioneers are offering on behalf of the same owner two very suitable building sections in Ravensworth Place, also three very reliable horses. The whole of the furniture will be found in excellent order, and will suit householders or anyone furnishing.

We regret to have to record the death of Mr John Mathers, of Taikorea, a very old resident of the district, which took place at the Palmerston Hospital on Saturday. The late Mr Mathers had not enjoyed the best of health for some little time and about a week ago was removed to the Palmerston Hospital, where it was found necessary to operate on him. The operation took place on Wednesday, but was not successful, the sufferer passing away on Saturday. The late Mr Mathers was 58 years of age, and had been a resident of the district for about 30 years. He leaves a widow and a family of five to mourn their loss.
