FIRE.
A lire broke out last night in a dwelling in Harbour Street owned by Mr J. Spelmau, and occupied by Mr J . Weller. The outbreak was first noticed by Mr L. McCarthy, who rang the bell at about 6.50 p.m. It being just before the time the train was due, a large crowd was soon on the spot, but the lire had too big a hold for there to be any chance of saving the building, which was totally destroyed. Those present, seeing there was no prospect of extinguishing the lire, set about saving the furniture aud effects, which were ptactically all removed, although they were considerably knocked about in the hurry. Other willing woikers gave their attention to the adjoining building, occupied by Mr 0. Dawson, and prevented the fire from spreading to it. The furniture in this house was also removed on to the street, much against the wish of the owner, who considered it was quite safe in the house.
The fire broke out near the kitchen fireplace, the only inmates at the time being two boys, sons of Mr Weller, Mr Weller having gone out, and Mrs Weller was away in Palmerston. The building which was destroyed was a four-roomed one, and was not insured. It is understood the furniture was insured for
