Billtown, in Adams County (U.S.), has a unique distinction just now. It is the only town in the wide world at the present moment where the only voters are women. And it has come about in a novel way. At the last elections the men all sold their votes, and the corruption was so rampant that the Court disfranchised the male voters tor five years ! Under the Constitution of the State the women may vote for school boards, and only women are eligible for school managers. It is to be hoped that the women of Billtown, for the honour ol their sex, will rise to the occasion and vote only for morally clean men. Quite peculiar circumstances arose in connection with one census return which was made up by a resident of Gisborne. The schedule was duly filled up at the specified time, but on Monday morning it was found that the family had iucreased by one, and there was much speculation as to whether the newly-arrived member should be included, The subenumerator, when collecting the returns, was asked for his opinion, and promptly pointed out that the Act provided that travellers who arrived on Monday morning, and were not enumerated elsewhere, would have to be included, and consequently, the little stranger was duly tallied. Who is the oldest person born of European parents in New Zealand ? As far as I can learn (says a writer in the Auckland Herald) that distinction belongs to Mr T. C. Williams, of Auckland, who was born at Paihia, in the Bay of Islands, as far back as 1825. Mr H. Cook, who lives up the Waikari River, near Russell, was born at Stewart Island in 1827, and Mrs S. Bowler (a sister of the late Mrs H. Lethbridge), who resides at Kaeo, near Whangaroa, was born at Te Puna, ih the Bay of Islands, in August, 1828. Next on the list is Mrs Kemp, who was born at Paihia on 23rd February, 1830, and lives at Kerikeri in a house that was built by the missionaries in 18x9, and is the oldest standing in New Zealand. Mr C. B, Stone is the first male child of European parents born in the City of Auckland. He celebrated his seventieth birthday about a fortnight since. Mrs Slator, who is still alive, was the first European child born in Auckland, having preceded Mr Stone by thirteen days. For Chronic Chest Complaints, Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure, Is 6d, 2s 6d
