BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MELTING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. Present: —His ship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles,Esq.) aud Crs. Coley, Rimmer, Ross, Gibbs, Speirs, Adams and Stewart. COOK STREET EXTENSION. A letter was read from Mr R. Moore in connection with Cook Street extension, in which he stated that Mr Geo. Coley was willing to enter into a bond to complete same to the satisfaction of the Council if that body would take over the road in order that transfers of property might be completed. —It was decided on the motion of Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Adams, that the application be held over until the 24th iust. NOXIOUS WEEDS. Mr J. Wardrop, chairman of the School Commissioners, wrote, in connection with the lupins, etc., on ihe Reserve in Avenue Road, that the Commissioners were abolished as from March 31st, aud the Reserve had been vested in the Land Board, who now had control of same. It was explained that complaint had been made about the noxious weeds on this property and that the School Commissioners had promised to attend to same. Cr Coley considered that the matter should be dealt with the same as if the section w r as owned by private individuals. Moved by Cr Speirs and seconded by Cr Rimmer, that the matter of noxious weeds on section No. 325 be referred to the Wellington Land Board aud that they be asked to take immediate steps. —Carried. LIBRARY SUBSIDY, The Paymaster-General notified that the Government subsidy on library, 15s 3d, had been paid into the District Fund Account. BEACH ROAD. It was decided on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Rimmer, that a special meeting of the Council be held on Monday, April 24th, to strike a special rate for Beach Road of ,£1250. WAIN STREET FOOTPATHS. Cr Ross brought up the question of asphalting the remainder of the Main Street footpaths. He considered the matter was urgent. It had been held over from last year for want of funds and he considered It should now be gone on with. He moved that the Council commence to lay down asphalt on the footpath in Main Street, six ieet wide, as was passed to be done 12 months ago, as the work is absolutely necessary. The motion was seconded by Cr Gibbs and carried. BAKER STREET EXTENSION. Mr W. S. Carter wrote offering to form road up to his boundary, trim sides, cart necessary sand and turf same for the sum of 10s. After some discussion it was decided on the motion of Cr Rimmer, seconded by Cr Adams, that the Town Clerk and the foreman visit the proposed work and give an estimate of the cost. Estimate to be submitted to the special meeting to be held on April 24th. GENERAL. A circular letter was read from the Town Clerk of Wellington, in reference to a superannuation scheme in connection with municipalities. It was decided on the motion of Cr Adams, seconded by Cr Gibbs, that the Town Clerk write to Mr Palmer, asking lor percentage of wages or contributions re superannuation suggested by other Councils. A letter was read from Mr W. Rimmer, asking that the trees on the hill in Victoria Park at the back of his property, be either cut down or topped, in order to let the morning sun on to his house. —The application was referred to the Town Clerk, with power to act, on the motion of Cr Gibbs, seconded by Cr Ross. Mr T. L- Martin wrote, asking for permission to put one-foot drain pipes in drain opposite his section in Jenks Street.—Permission granted. Mr William Stubbs, Secretary of the Palmerston Hospital Board, wrote, enclosing circular setting forth Mr W. G. Pearce’s views on the question of a free hospital.— It was decided to discuss same at the next meeting of the Council. Mr F. W. Gardes wrote, asking that a bathroom and wash-house be erected at the ferry house. — Proposed by Cr Gibbs, seconded by Cr Ross, and carried, that tenders be invited for the above work. Tenders to be in by the 24th inst. The poundkeeper reported that during the mouth of March 23 head of cattle and 21 horses had been impounded by the ranger, and driving fees amounting to £2 3s had been collected. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that the Borough wras fairly clean, except in one or two cases, where notices had been given to comply with the by-laws.

Accounts amounting to .£637 16s 2d were passed for payment.

It was decided on the motion of Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Adams, to advertise for tenders for the purchase and removal of the old Council Chambers.
