VALEDICTORY REMARKS.
THE COUNCIL—A HAPPY FAMILY.
At last night’s Council meeting the Mayor said that as it would be the last general meeting of the present Council he would take the opportunity of thanking the Councillors for the consideration shown the chair during the two years he had occupied it. The meetings had always been a pleasure to him to attend, and the business had gone on very smoothly. On looking over the two years’ work, he was confident they had given their services with profit to the Borough. Another point: their election pledges had been carried out as far as possible. The gas works had been taken over by the Council, aud the erection of a municipal hall was about to be proceeded with. A water and drainage scheme had not been installed, but the Council had done all that lay in their power in this connection by taking a poll of the ratepayers. He didn’t think that any previous Council could show such a good record. He concluded by thanking the Town Clerk for the very valuable assistance he had rendered. Cr Gibbs said that while he did not wish to convert the Council into a mutual admiration society he would like to thank the Mayor for the courtesy shown him during his term as Councillor, aud also Mr Fraser for information, etc., supplied. Any information that he (the speaker) required was never too much trouble for Mr Fraser to supply. Cr Ross said that the meetings that he had attended had always been very pleasant, and with the exception of one or two occasions on which little matters had been carried outside, the business had been conducted in a very cordial manner. The conduct of the meetings reflected great credit on the chair. He also thanked Mr Fraser for his courtesy.
