CHURCH UNION AND THE MASSES.
Svdnky, April 5. Lord Chelmsford presided at a large gathering of representatives of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches. The meeting carried a resolution affirming the principle of union. Lord Chelmsford deplored the alienation which at present existed of vast masses of people from the churches. It was difficult to find the principal reason, aud he was not going to suggest one. Other speakers were hopeful of the ultimate union of the churches there represented. A spirit of union was growing. Mkujournk, April 5. The Baptist Congress adopted a resolution expressing hearty sympathy with the workers of the Commonwealth aud New Zealand in their just aims aud aspirations for a fair distribution of wealth, greater equality of opportunity, and better conditions of living. Another resolution favoured fostering international amity and goodwill, aud viewed with disappointment and alarm the amazing multiplication of armaments by the Great Powers.
