NO-LICENSE IN MASTERTON.
Mastkrton, March 20. At a meeting iu the Town Hall last night, addressed by Mr Bedford, a resolution was carried by acclamation :—“That this vast assemblage of Mastcrton citizens declares no-license a magnificent success, and that it is in the best and highest interests of the community.”
The action reported above is the sequel to an organised demonstration against No-license on Saturday night, when an address by Mr H. D. Bedford was continually interrupted by a section of the audience hooting and yelling. Mr Bedford criticised an article appearing iu the Daily Times, with regard to the closing of certain businesses in Masterton, but his remarks for the most part were lost. Cheers and counter-cheers created an uproar the like of which had not been heard in Masterton for a number of years. Mr E. G. Eton, a local chemist and a figure iu the public life of the town, crowned the confusion by mounting the platform and declaring that No-license iu Masterton had been a failure. He was followed by the organiser of the No-liceuse party in the Wairarapa district, Mr J. Bridges, who made an ineffectual attempt to address the crowd, In response to the calls of a number of the audience who were evidently out tor a bit of fuu, Mr John Cameron, antiChinese agitator, took the platform. After disclaiming any connection with either party, he criticised certain of Mr Bedford's statements, and at the request of someone iu the body of the hall, put a motion iu favour of Restoration. The result was a pandemonium, and it was announced that the motion was carried.
