A SPURIOUS ARISTOCRAT.
A young man who posed in Auckland as the Hon. Kvelyu V. Kitson, second son of Lord Airedale, but who gave his name to the detective as Gordon Palmer, was charged at the Supreme Court on Wednesday with false pretences, and with having attempted suicide by taking morphia, and was ordered to a reformatory for seven years. His methods were so simple that they did not arouse suspicion. He put up at a leading hotel, where he treated various acquaintances with great liberality, but, it is said, at the landlord’s expense. The climax was reached when a party arrived as the young man’s guests at a supper, their host failing to put in an appearance. The imposter forged the name of Kvelyu V. Kitson to cheques for and £6 respectively, and that of A. M Myers to a cheque for all of which he exchanged for cash. He was arrested after having swallowed morphia in an endeavour to take his life. Accused was charged under the name of Albert Gibbs, otherwise Kitson, and pleaded guilty to all the charges.
