TOWN HADE LOAN PROPOSAL. CARRIED BY OVERWHELMING MAJORITY. The poll on the proposal to raise a loan of £2, 800 for the erection of a municipal hall for Foxton and to acquire a section of land and cottage adjoining the site, was held yesterday. When the subject of a municipal hall was first mooted, shortly after the destruction of the old hall by fire, a certain amount of opposition was expressed against the proposal, but the Borough Council determined to give the people the right to say whether they would erect and control their own hall.
Very little interest was taken in the poll before noon, but the Mayor and Crs. Adams, Gibbs and Speirs placed their motor cars at the disposal of voters during the afternoon, and rallied them up to discharge the duties of citizenship. Crs Rimmer and Stewart checked the voters as they came to the booth.
The result of the poll was announced by the Returning Officer, Mr Alt'. Fraser, at about 7.30 p.m., as follows For the proposal, 198 ; against, 43 : informal, 4. Majority for the proposal, *53The result was received with cheers. The Mayor thanked the ratepayers for adopting the Council’s proposal by such a “ thumping majority.” He said the result proved that the ratepayers had confidence in the Council and this would inspire Councillors with fresh hopes for the future. Cheers were called for the Mayor and Council and lustily responded to.
