HERMANSON COMPENSATION CASE.

AN EXPLANATION

We have received the following letter from Messrs Wm. Ross and Sou, Ltd., re the Hermauson compensation case, partly heard at the Arbitration Court on Monday last, and which we reproduced from the New Zealand Times :

• 1 Referring to your report of Hermansou and this Company before the Arbitration Court at Wellington, we think this report is somewhat misleading as far as we are concerned in it. We had no official notice that the matter was to be dealt with this week, as the insurance company is the actual defendant in the case, and not ourselves. We are not required to attend the Court, and the counsel was engaged by the insurance company solely in their own interests. Our Company pays a large sum every year, and which is not deducted from the employees, for the purpose ol insuring them against accident, in accordance with the Workers’ Compensation Act. After an accident happens the matter is entirely in the insurance company’s hands, which then takes the employer’s place and becomes responsible in the matter as provided for by law. We are instructed by our indemuiliers to cease payments in the case in question pending settlement by the Court as to whether the compensation should cease under the provisions contained in the Compensation Act to meet such like cases.”

After further discussion between counsel and the Court, the case above referred to was adjourned until the next sitting of the Court at Wellington.
