THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

JANUARY GRADING RETURNS. The total number of hales of hemp graded by the Department during January was 9,899 as against 12,296 for the corresponding month of the previous year, a decrease of 2,397 bales. For the twelve months ended January 31st, 1911, the number of bales graded was 124,417 as against 93,035 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 31,382 bales. During the month of January, 3,256 bales of tow were dealt with as against 14,184 for the previous month, a decrease of 928 bales. The number of bales of hemp and tow graded at the different ports throughout the Dominion during the month was as under.

The total number of bales of fine hemp graded was 417. Of this number 114 were graded at Blenheim, 97 at Wellington, 85 at Foxton, 75 at Lyttelton, 41 at Pictou and 5 at Auckland. Of the 6,275 bales of good fair, 2979 came from Foxton, 1891 from Wellington, 760 from Auckland, 238 from Napier, 209 from Dunedin, 134 from Picton, 51 from Bluff and 13 from Blenheim. The amount of fair graded was 3,044 of which Wellington contributed 1508, Auckland 848, Bluff 392, Foxton 218, Dunedin 78. There were 133 bales of common, 88 of which were graded at Auckland, 33 at Wellington, 8 at P'oxtou and 4 at Bluff. Foxton and Wellington were the only ports where any hemp was rejected, 21 at Foxton and 9 at Wellington. The number of bales in the different grades of tow were as under: —

First grade.—Napier 60, Foxton 59, Wellington 362, Blenheim 86, Picton 83, and Lyttelton 95. Second grade. —Auckland 374, Foxton 554. Wellington 664, Dunedin 22, Bluff 33. Third grade.—Auckland 195, Foxton 136, Wellington 132, Picton 92 and Bluff 150. Condemned. — Auckland 103, Wellington 21, and Bluff 35.

The percentage of the different grades throughout the Dominion were as follows :—Fine, 4'2i ; good fair, 63*39 ; fair, 3075 > common, 1*35 ; rejected, 07 ; and of the hemp graded at Foxton 2‘56 per cent, was hue, 89*97 good fair, 6*58 fair, ‘24 common and ‘63 rejected.
