MANSLAUGHTER.
Auckland, March 2. William Osborne was charged in the Police Court with manslaughter, arising from the death of Mary Gilchrist, on January 7th. The medical evidence was to the effect that two of the woman’s ribs had been fractured, likely from a kick by a boot or a fall against a table or chair, and that such violence would have caused the woman’s death. Sergeant Ferguson said that on December 23rd deceased made a statement to the effect that the prisoner assaulted her, but she added ; “I provoked him and was nearly as much to blame as him.” Deceased also described her life with Osborne, and stated he only earned ten shillings in three months. Accused, who was present, heard deceased’s statement and said : ‘‘Yes, that’s about right.” Prisoner pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. Bail was fixed in two sureties of each, and one of ,£IOO.
