PROPOSED TOWN HALL.

GOVERNMENT GRANTS SUBSIDY OF

The Mayor received the lollowing telegram from Sir Joseph Ward yesterday: — “Referring to your telegram of the Ist March, I have pleasure in informing you that the Government has approved a subsidy of £ tor £ up to as contribution towards cost of Coronation Town Hall at Foxtou. is the limit Government gives on any case throughout the Dominion.” It is hoped that this grant will be the means of removing any opposition that may have existed to the loan proposals for the erection of the Municipal Hall. In conversation with the Mayor this morning, he expressed the opinion that he did not anticipate that the loan would be a burden on the ratepayers at all, and in view of the subsidy granted by the Government the loan should be carried almost unanimously.
