SHANNON v. FOXTON. The return match, Shannon v. Foxton, was played on the local pitch on Saturday afternoon. When the- e teams previously met at Shannon earlier in the season the Foxtonians suffered defeat, but on Saturday they were successful in turning the tables, the match ending in a win for the home team by 33 runs on the first innings. The scores were Foxton 124, Shannon gi. Shannon won the toss and elected to bat, Trewmewan and Berquist opening to the bowling of Bowe and Guilder. Runs came fairly freely, both batsmen playing the bowling with confidence. With the score in the vicinity of 30, Berquist was run out. Judd followed, but after making four was bowled. Harris was next and was shaping very well but after making eight had the misfortune to be thrown out by Guilder, who fielded the ball splendidy. Randall filled the vacancy and ran up ten in a very short time. When he was disposed of the score was about 70. From this on none of the other batsmen made any stand at all, the runs that were being scored coming from Tremewan’s bat. This player was batting particularly well and when the last man made his appearance it looked as if he was going to see the innings out, but another change in the bowling was effective, the first ball of the over scattering his bails. Of the Shannon batsmen, Treraewau was far and away the best, his score of 45 being a very fine innings. This player is the most consistent batsman Shannon possesses, scoring well in almost every game he plays in. His scores against Foxton during the last two or three seasons include 79 not out, 50, 45 and 41 not out. Berquist is another batsmen who shows fairly good form and Harris and Randall also performed very well on Saturday.

Evans was Foxton’s most successful howler and caused the Shannon batsmen no end of trouble. He secured Jive wickets at the cost of 16 runs and in his first over performed the coveted hat trick. The rest of the bowlers did not meet with any great amount of success. Taken all through the fielding was little above Foxton’s usual standard, but could not be called good. With a score of 91 to overhaul Foxton’s task was not a light one. Barber and Whibley faced the bowling of Randall and Berquist, but with a total of five on the score sheet Barber was bowled by a very fine ball from Randall. Rore followed but also fell a victim to Randall with the score at n. Randall at this stage was bowling particularly well and the batsmen could take no chances with it. Howe was next and the score was brought on to 20 when he was caught at mid-on. Robinson filled the vacancy and runs came a little faster. At 39 Whibley was bowled. Guilder was at the wickets until the score reached 51. Two runs later Evans was caught by the wicket keeper and with six wickets down for 53' Foxton’s position did not look too hopeful. Bowe and Robinson brought the score up to 64 when the latter made room for Ward, who at once commenced to hit at everything that was sent down to him. The score sheet read 107 when Ward ran himself out. His score of 25 included a six and a five. Seventeen runs later the innings closed, leaving Foxtou victorious by the above mentioned margin. Randall was the best Shannon bowler and really deserved a better average than he obtained—four wickets for 25 runs.
