THE STREET LAMPS.
At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council a letter was read from Mr Sluunel, manager of the gas works, in reply to the resolution passed at the previous meeting complainof the manner in which the lighting of the street lamps was carried out, advising that he would do his best to keep the lamps burning. The broken mantle complained of by one of the Councillors had been replaced the day following the complaint aud the reason of lamp at south end ol Mam Street not being lighted was on account of it being in the shop for repairs. The present lamps were unsuitable and would never give satisfaction as they were worn out and not rain, moth, or wind proof. The cost of upkeep aud loss ol gas on account of same at the present time was more than sufficient to pay the interest on the cost of new lamps. One lamp was sent in for the inspection of Councillors and this was found to be in a very bad stale aud really beyond repair.
It was decided on the motion of Cr Rimmer, seconded by Cr Ross that the Town Clerk he instructed to get price for copper street lamps from T. W. Butcher aud others.
